Future of Belgium

The separation of Belgium into the Dutch-speaking Flanders region and the the French-speaking Walloon region. What about Flanders to be annexed to the Netherlands and Wallonia to France?

A possible future:

  1. Walloons, that long independant :O If Belgium (i'm Belgian) ever goes seperatistic Flanders won't go to Holland, Holland isn't being liked here in Flanders, Walloons like France, so if we go seperate ways, they want to go to France, BUT France isn't that fond of Walloon xD

  2. Yeah I think you are right about Flanders...because the flemish are Catholics and the dutch are protestants ..that's why their union before 1831 was a failure.

But about the Wallons...France and the Walloons are both Catholic and speak French...so why not join together?

    1. because wallony without brussel is not viable, it could be a to high charge for paris. And flanders won't let brussel become french. And there is such differences, some particularties that the both won't drop.
For exemple the way of voting.
Proportional in belgium and by majority in france.

    2. Why couldn't Brussels be a city-state? Something like Washington DC?

And the problem between Flanders and the Netherlands is also a bit of a language problem. Although we officially speak the same language, there are big differences. And unlike the other differences in dialects in the region, you really notice it when you cross the Dutch-Flemish border.

  3. that catholic thing isn't a point anymore, our southern provinces in the Nertherlands have allready a catholic base. Maybe flanders don't wan't to go to the Netherlands, but the netherlands would like to have Flanders.

  4. I'm dutch and we in Holland want the Flanders come to the Netherlands, but they don't

If they want to live with 2 cultures in 1 land, okay.

  5. I'd say that the Province du Luxembourg would seek to be incorporated in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg...

  6. In my opinion, Flanders will first become independent before somewhat later make a confederal union with Holland to become "Republic of The Netherlands". The Dutch just have to show a little bit more interest in Flanders.
Wallonia will go to France and indeed the Belgian Luxembourg province might seek going back to the Grand Duchy like it was before the Belgian independence. Ost-Belgien (Eupen-St Vith), the German speaking part of Belgium will go back to Germany, like before.

  8. Don't British have an interest in an independent Belgium? Shouldn't their opinion matter at all?

    1. As British (English actually) I would say that it may be that around the time Belgium is breaking up Great Britain may be breaking up too ! Its not inevitable but there is already a kind of momentum behind it. Scotland has a referendum in 2014. Once such a break begins I cant imagine Wales not going the same way (although problems there possibly between the Welsh-speaking part of Wales in the North and the English-speaking southern part. So maybe the historical British pre-occupation with an independent Belgium wont be a major pre-occupation.

  10. Wouldnt it be logical for Wallonia to become part of France, Flanders becomes an independent state given that it is rich enough to stand on its own. That just leaves the status of Brussels. I'm English but do any Belgians have views on that ?

  11. Brussels is the key indeed. I'm Flemish and would rather be a part of The Netherlands than of Belgium. Independance would be great though.

And Brussels... Divide it or give it to Wallonia, they'll need it to survive.

  12. Half of Belgium should be French, the Dutch ruling is pathetic and will not be good for Belgium. France's heroic resistance in many battles proves its' better than Holland. Belgium should become part of France

    1. Have you any idea of the history of Belgium and of the people who live there. I don't think so because the Dutchspeaking people were discriminated by the frenchspeaking part. It was only in the 1950's that more members of the parliament were dutchspeaking than frenchspeaking but the dutchspeaking part (Flanders) had always the majority of the population. And those french basterds have tried to conquer Belgium like Elzas, Bretagne,... Google French Flanders (Dunkirk,Lille, etc) and you will see that they partially succeded in their conquest.
BTW the Dutchspeaking people don't rule the country. The federal government doesn't even have the majority of the votes in Flanders so nowadays the Walloons are ruling the country.

You shouldn't trust English (because of the lack of Englishmen who can speak Dutch. So the English people only see/read the Walloon view) or Frenchspeaking sources (some of them like 'Le Soir' call Dutch an inferiour language. They are not neutral. On the subject of Belgium the best sources are German ones and the Dutch sources from the Northen Neatherlands or from the Flemish who want to stay Belgian.

  13. I think the best way to solve the Belgium problem is to divide Belgium and the whole Low lands in 3 countries.

    I) The Northern Netherlands (which is composed of the Flemish community(Brussels is part of that) + the Neatherlands/Holland + French Flanders(Dunkirk)+ the Low Dietsch area + Comines + the Dutch colonies(Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Sint-Eustachius, Sint-Maarten, Saba) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Dietsch, http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komen_(Belgi%C3%AB)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Flanders
    http://www.uoc.edu/euromosaic/web/document/neerlandes/an/i1/i1.html
That would unify all dutchspeakers of the European continent in one state + colonies of 'Holland'.

II)The seconde state would be the Frenchspeaking part that would consist of: the Belgian provinces of Walloon-Brabant, Namur, Hainout(without Comines) and Liège(without Platdiets area and the Germanspeaking Community of Belgium)+ the French region Nord-Pas de Calais without French Flanders.

III)Last but not least: The East Netherlands or the Germanspeaking part of it.
It should be composed of the Belgian province of Luxemburg, the Duchy of Luxumburg and the Germanspeaking community of Belgium.

I can make a map if you need some more clarification. ;)
